This curious plant makes an intriguing addition to any home, whether its a gift or a well deserved treat.

The designed tillandsia ball hangs from a stylish metal frame and will take what it needs from the atmosphere, in very dry environments it will benefit from being sprayed with water every few days. They enjoy bright but diffused light, so provide light shade from direct sunshine.

Tillandsias get all of the water and nutrients that they need from the air, which is why they are  also known as air plants as they don’t need to planted in soil, it is a genus of around 650 species of evergreen, perennial flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae, native to the forests, mountains and deserts of northern Mexico and south-eastern United States, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to mid Argentina. Their leaves, more or less silvery in colour, are covered with specialized cells (trichomes) capable of rapidly absorbing water that gathers on them.

As well as looking good, houseplants support human health in homes, offices, school and hospitals. Research suggests that the greatest benefits of indoor plants are through wellbeing and productivity improvement. There is discussion around their influence on indoor air quality.

The psychological benefits of indoor plants have been shown as:

  • An improved mood
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Increased worker productivity (adding plants to office environments in particular)
  • Increased speed of reaction in a computer task
  • Improved attention span (in some scientific studies, but not all)
  • Increased pain tolerance (for example, where plants were used in hospital settings)
The physical health benefits of indoor plants have been shown as:
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Reduced fatigue and headaches by 20-25 percent in one study
  • Patients in hospital rooms with plants reported decreased post-operative pain
