Afternoon tea is a quintessential English custom, thought to have been introduced by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. With a long gap between lunch and dinner, the Duchess requested a tray of bread, butter and cake mid-afternoon. This became a habit that she began inviting friends to, and so afternoon tea was born.
